Casco Antiguo is the colonial city of Panama, which was founded in 1673 after the Pacific settlement now known as Old Panama was sacked by pirate Henry Morgan.
This area remained the center of Panamanian life for almost 300 years.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the wealthy families of the time began to move to the suburbs with the arrival of the automobile that facilitated transportation, and the Old Town was gradually abandoned. But in 1998, when it was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, a joint effort between the Panamanian government, investors from around the world and UNESCO revived this place and made it shine again just as it did 300 years ago.
The predominating architecture is in the French and Republican styles.
Today when you go to the Old Town, the feeling is indescribable. Walking through its narrow brick streets, you see the beauty of its buildings and the multiple squares and churches that make it up.
And with the sensation of a life that radiates within its cafes and restaurants in the squares, one feels as if they are in Europe, but they are here in Panama with an eternal summer.
